Extremely hot venue. Sold out shows are packed with people. Dress light and stand by the right side doors for a cool breeze. Water is not allowed in but they do sell bottled for $3. The stage is not very elevated and the floor is flat so its hard to see if youre short. However, some performers use the screen in the middle, as pictured. It also gets very loud inside. I recommend using ear plugs. Parking is free at the venue and theres free overflow parking at the sports arena next door.

Had my first show at SOMA - San Diego this past weekend, and it was a great experience. Overall a really neat and fun venue. What stood out the most was the exceptional security team! Every interaction I had with security there was amazing, from the ones at the door to check us in answering all the questions we had and guiding us before going in, the security at the barricade being friendly, bringing waters, andmaking sure we were okay, to the security closing out the night making sure every fan was able to talk to the artists that were out there with no rushing. An amazing security team, that truly made the experience and our night.

I recently attended a live performance at Soma and was thoroughly impressed by the entire experience. The show itself was absolutely fantastic—each act delivered high-energy performances that captivated the audience from start to finish. The sound quality and lighting were top-notch, enhancing the overall enjoyment of the event. One aspect that truly stood out was the exceptional security provided by the experienced staff. From the moment we arrived, it was clear that safety was a top priority. The security team was professional, vigilant, and courteous, ensuring a smooth and secure experience for everyone. Their presence was reassuring, allowing us to fully enjoy the concert without any concerns.Overall, Soma exceeded my expectations with its stellar performances and outstanding security. I highly recommend attending an event here for an unforgettable and safe entertainment experience.

I made the rookie mistake of not researching the venue before buying tix to a show. ALL THE ONE STAR REVIEWS, BELIEVE THEM!!!!!!!!!!!!!Absolutely NO VENTILATION at this venue. Like how is it even possible for this place to be in business 😭😭😭i got lucky and read to stand by the exit door cus they open it to get SOME air but then kept getting VIOLENTLY SHOVED EVERY OTHER MINUTE by security trying to get through the crowd to rescue the girls that kept passing out im sure from the lack of air. (I get they’re doing their job but if the venue had any type of HVAC, security would not have to be so aggressive)i would never come here again, not even FOR FREE. parking is limited so if u risk on coming, get there early. I saw many purses of all sizes so i don’t think there’s a policy on that.Idk how people rated more than one star lolyes you get to watch your fave artists in an intimate setting but you’re for real risking your life, don’t do it 😣 this venue is not iti learned the hard way and the worst part is i drove from LA 😂 smh

San Diegos leading all-ages venue for punk and alternative-rock concerts.basement area, known as The Dungeon (Which was the actual freezer room for the slaughterhouse)that held approximately 100 people. It was in the dungeon that many local San Diego bands got their first opportunity to play at the club.In 1994, SOMA moved to a former warehouse at 5303 Metro Street, just south of the University of San Diego. Major artists such as Faith No More, Fugazi, Pavement, Radiohead, The Ramones, The Smashing Pumpkins, Weezer and Oasis performed here, as well as many local bands. The venue closed in 1999.In 2002, Paul reopened SOMA at its current home, a former multiplex movie theater that was renovated into a concert venue. Walls dividing individual theaters were torn down to create one large area for the main stage. It can hold up to 2,300 occupants in its main hall, and the side stage can accommodate 500+. Many of the theaters old production offices have been turned into dressing rooms for the bands which overlook the audience. There is a snack bar and merchandise area in the lobby. On September 22, 2016, SOMA served beer in the side-stage room for a show by the band Descendents. This marked the first time in the venues history that alcohol had been served. The first person to ever order a beer inside of SOMA was lead singer Mikey Carnevale of The Frights

The worst venue I have ever been to. They do not run the AC even when full to capacity. Two people fainted and got carried away before the main act even came on. The crowd was begging the band for water. Reading other reviews, it legitimately sounds like someone faints at every show. How is this legal?I also witnessed a security guard verbally assault a younger attendee for saying “Yes ma’am”. Unreal behavior.Since it is an all ages venue, most of the crowd is very young so expect to deal with rowdy people. People were pushing their way to the front and complaining that no one was moshing. At one point, a group of girls spilled their nail polish on the floor leaving a horrible stench.Between the agonizing heat, rude youngsters pushing through the crowd and general bad atmosphere I had to leave the show after 30 minutes for my sanity. If you are a concert goer, go somewhere that is 18+ and has ventilation.

Its standing only, and they do serve beer, but the place is actually pretty big. I was surprised in a good way. The concert that we saw was excellent!! I really enjoyed coming to this venue to experience a concert from one of my favorite artists. The venue is more intimate which makes it great for general admission tickets. I personally paid for a VIP ticket when I visited SOMA and I’m thankful that I did because the audio/sound was a bit off at several points during the performance. I also noticed that the acoustics of the building aren’t the greatest which provides a challenge if you want to hear the concert clearly. I still recommend this place because I think it’s a great opportunity to view your favorite artist in an up close setting. Additionally, this venue is family friendly so you don’t have to deal with pot addicts and alcoholics ruining your experience. The staff was very organized and cordial, they gave concert-goers waters during the performance which was an absolute lifesaver. The venue was also pretty clean by the end of the night, which showed that the staff care about maintaining the venue in a good condition. I’ll be coming back to SOMA, I still had a magical night!

Great experience seeing Sevendust, it was my first show at this venue. Had a great time! Good acoustics and sound, lighting, etc. Large open standing space with breathing room between people. A couple fights broke out, and security kicked the initiators out quickly. Security was in the pit with people which was cool to see. If I had one feedback its that drink selection was limited to Bud Light products - this is hardly craft beer as advertised on their website. Still, the venue sounded great for a rock show, which is what matters most.

Ive been coming to Soma since I was a teenager and now Im in my 30s. I have seen so many great artists here. If its a bigger artist youll wanna get here early. Parking is free but limited and there is overflow of free parking in the sports arena. Outdoor security is amazing. They remember me every time I come, theyre so kind. Since the beginning of time air flow has been a problem. It gets hotter when more people show up. For the safety of artists and guests I wish they did something about it. Sound is better up front than in the back so of course getting here early is important for a lot of reasons. There is a ledge on the left side for those who want to sit, like I said space is limited. Sidestage is awesome. Its really intimate for artists and their fans compared to mainstage and it gives people and opportunity to hear new music especially from local San Diego bands who cant quite make it to mainstage yet. Overall this is a great venue besides it being a little outdated and air flow situation.

I’ve been to this venue three times and every time the artist performing had to stop what they were doing to check in on someone who wasn’t feeling well. This place is NOT well ventilated and even in the winter when the temperatures are cooler it still gets much too hot in there. The floor isn’t slanted at all and the stage isn’t very tall, so it’s pretty much impossible to see if you’re not tall. Came here for a Pierce the Veil concert on New Years Eve. The venue itself is relatively barebones, but that’s not to say it’s not a great place. It is just one large stage for the most part and a single standing area, i.e., there is no separate area for VIP or any seats anywhere. There is a small platform though off to the right of the main stage for handicapped persons, and the view from it looked to be pretty good. Bathrooms got pretty messy pretty quickly, and nothing got restocked so they were out of soap and paper towels. They could also stand to add another restroom, particularly a women’s restroom. Line gets pretty long. But overall, it was a great experience and the venue itself was capable of putting on a great party!

Not just the worst venue Ive ever been to, this place can be dangerous. I overheard one of the merch guys saying the fire marshal wanted to shut down the show because the merch lines were blocking the exits. Parking looked like it could be tight if you dont get there early. Also there were plenty of broken glass bottles in the parking lot and I was there too early to blame it on rowdy concert goers. They dont take cards for beverages/water so bring cash because this place seems to operate the same way it did when they opened their doors.Aside from that, the floor is flat so good luck seeing anything unless youre near the front. For some reason, whoever handles the lights kept shining brutally bright white lights into the crowd. I left early even though I love Cannibal Corpse because the extremely bright lights gave me a headache. During the first bands set, the vocals were inaudible, during the second bands set, the vocals and guitars were inaudible. I cant imagine a worse space to hold a concert.

If you have anxiety or have trouble regulating your body temperature I recommend bringing a hand held fan if you can because it is EXTREMELY hot inside. Even in the fall and winter. there were a couple times I had to step outside because of the heat and I went in November. Another iffy thing is security, they’re pretty rude. Was screamed at because I had forgotten I had hand sanitizer in my jacket pocket. Was pretty intense over some hand sanitizer. Getting in was pretty quick and seem-less, was able to find a spot inside within a few minutes. I had early access because I bought vip tickets so I don’t know what general admission would be like because this was my first time going. They passed like 10 water bottles back also and thought that was enough. Also, you have to have cash to buy water. I think that was also a massive issue and a really easy problem to fix (take credit card). Also, one of the women security guards outside was harassing a bunch of young women. I saw like 10 kids get dragged out by the neck from the security guards for doing pretty typical things you’d do at a metalcore/hardcore show - felt like security just wanted to show how big and tough they were.

Very basic venue. Paid extra for premium viewing and it was a joke. The place is basically a warehouse, premium viewing is a slightly elevated platform with no seating & only good viewing for about half the spaces they sell. Sound engineering for the main act was so bad that it was physically painful. There are so many great venues in this area. Skip the strip mall warehouse & try out Humphreys by the Bay or Music Box downtown. Even if you love the band, skip it. Only upside was nice staff and security.

Soma has been a staple for me for over a decade now. They have a side stage for small venue feel and a large stage, which they ingeniously adjust the size of the room via a back curtain wall depending on how big the show is. I often skip house of blues Anaheim to drive down for a show at Soma. Its just a great venue for the type of shows I go to (hardcore, metalcore), and they dont sell alcohol which is a MASSIVE plus for hardcore shows. Maximizes the energy and removes the possibility of your typical dumb, drunk fights occurring in the pit. Soma + Chain Reaction for life. Thank you for existing.

The place stinks like stale beer, the carpet in the halls is foul with gum stains all over, womens bathroom was flooded with 1/2 of water (and god knows what else) last night. Overbooked the show I went to so it was insanely crowded to the point where I felt it was dangerous. The area around the place is super sketchy and they employ teenage kids to be “security”. The speakers were ridiculously loud (I love loud music but it was way too much even for me). worse yet I lost my drivers license and have tried reaching out to them by phone and by email (of course their phone number on their website has been disconnected) and there is no info on their site about retrieving lost items. So yeah avoid this place, I definitely won’t be coming back.

I was honestly scared to come here because of the reviews. We were so not looking forward to this venue we waited until 930 to come thinking a main band usually comes on at this time...and we were wrong. The headliner came on at 8:30 and played until 10. We missed nearly the whole show. A show we paid $100 to see and had been waiting months for. So let me tell you dont be afraid of this venue. The bathrooms were fine, theres a bar, theres ventilation..The staff were less than friendly but all the other stuff wasnt bad. Uber driver did tell us it was a bad neighborhood and not to walk out of parking lot but didnt look too bad. Anyway learn from us. Go early and dont assume they arent going to be closing at 10pm! She never contacted me to honor that either. The phone number on the site is not a working number and the only way to get in contact is through email and thats if staff responds. This space is not accessible and has no infrastructure to support the disabled. I was treated very rudely when I asked if there was an area to sit as I cannot stand for long periods of time. Staff directed me to sit on the stairs- which were sticky with drinks, had no visibility when seated, and were serving as an active passageway for others. This option where I was both a hazard and inconvenience was the only option offered. I tried to ask concert goers if I could sit on the side they refused to give up their seats and were mean to me. Staff didnt help even after being alerted to the situation. It was highly depressing runing my experience and I wont return. I encourage others to not support an inaccessible space.

Came here to see Mac Ayres and loved every minute of it. Just a couple things to note if you want to see a concert here (as someone who’s been to about 10 now):- Get here early, like an hour earlier than the ‘doors open’ call time if you want a nice view of the stage- If you’re short like me (I’m 5’2”) maybe invest in some comfortable platform shoes hahaha- The crowd will be dependent on who you’re seeing, I’m lucky Mac is an RnB artist so the crowd was chill but my brother saw a Rap artist in this same venue and the crowd got pretty rowdy to the point that my brother’s friend that he was with passed out.- People taller than you will push past you to get to the front of the venue- You will be very close, if not body-to-body with other people, luckily security propped the doors open so it wasn’t dreadfully hotOther than these things this was a great venue and I’d return to see another artist that I love as much as Mac. I also would recommend this venue for anyone else wanting to see an artist they really love :)

My brother wasnt feeling too well and almost passed out, shaking and stuff. Not sure what caused it but I can assure you it was not drug or alcohol related. Thats besides the point. Anyway, Ron let us outside to help him cool off and have a little privacy. He brought him a bunch of water, an ice pack and some pretzels. He checked on us every once in awhile because he still had a job to do. But he made sure he was good. He was a really nice guy and genuinely cared about what was happening. Im sure hed treat any other patron with the same care. Thanks again, Ron! Really great vibes at SOMA. My brother started feeling better and we got to see one hell of a show! 11/10 for sure.

A lot of neat shows and artists come through here. In my experiences parking has always been pretty easy. The last show I went to had beer being sold on the side stage. My only complaint, coming from a non-audio professional, is that the audio system seems to be set to be max loudness, which drowned out the bands mids and highs. Missing mids and highs made the music sound super heavy, which was indeed pretty cool and got people moving, but vocals and tight guitar/drumming was hard to discern.

The security had the emergency exit doors open just to help a little bit, but they’re only on one side of the room so there’s no flow. No overhead circulation. I’ve been to dozens of moshpit/front row rap concerts and festival sets and have never had issues, but I found myself walking to sit on the stairs by the door because I was seeing spots by the time the openers were done performing. Breathing hot recycled air is not the move. Bar, Snack bar and bathrooms were pretty cool but having to stand on the outside of then crowd just to breathe was not ideal. Aminé is touring next year and I will be avoiding Soma and going to the show in Anaheim. 2/5 stars :/

We recently went here on a Friday night when Alt-J was performing. We were stocked that a place this small had booked Al-J and were excited when we purchased our tickets for a great price when they went on sale. Thats about where the excitement ended. As our event date arrived I looked up the venue and the concert details so that we could make our dinner plans beforehand. That is when I learned it was an all-ages venue and by all-ages, all-ages. This includes no booze and lots of a 18-21 year olds running around. Once inside the venue, there was a massive line for the womens restroom and women were being escorted out of the venue for using the mens restroom. I get that they have rules, but maybe they should add some more restroom facilities. This was all well before the concerted started. Once we went into the MainStage area and joined the other 2000 people, we quickly realized there is no A/C here (or if there is, it doesnt work)! While we waited for the opening band we were already dripping with sweat. Kids around us were getting high, sneaking their booze and all around getting crazy. Thank goodness Alt-J was amazing to see or we would have left very quickly. We prefer to go to venues that arent all ages, that have A/C and that dont pack 2000 people into a sardine can. Prices for the concert were great but not worth enduring that environment. We wont be back here for a concert.

The absolute worst venue I have been to in San Diego. The sound was unfathomly bad. I think it was the worst sounding venue I have been to anywhere period.

Good place for events but serving only alcohol in the venue and non alcoholic is only being served at the entrance is very annoying. They also have no coat check.

Only one bathroom for each gender which gets torn apart by the end of the night… over crowded when sold out and super hot inside.

People there were kind and the show was awesome. Not very good at cracking down on weed use in the venue though.

Security there is amazing. They let you have fun. They get in the pit and have fun with the people. Big smiles on the guys. Epic location

Went to see AVB at SOMA. The staff at SOMA were pretty chill. Everyone enjoyed the show and had a great time.

An amazing smallish venue to see bands in a slightly more intimate setting while having the same audience energy as a large venue.
