The Belly Up has been around since 1974 providing an amazing venue for live music in Solana Beach. Staff has always been amazing, sound is one of the best around, and a great room for music! There are lots of seats around some first come and others reserved to sit and watch a show. I personally want to be in the general admission area front and center as theres no better place to be! Attached restaurant called the Tavern for pre-show meals for basically any time. Also good little restaurants in the general area. Lots of free street parking within two blocks. Shows sell out, so if someone you want to see is playing, get the tickets fast!

What an awesome place to see a band! Small spot, but big sound. I was worried that it would be hot, but the AC was cranking, and so were the 90s hits! (Saved by the 90s was playing)My only regret is that it took me this long to finally go. If you want to sit down, (but I mean, really who does at a concert?) you will need to get there early. We were 1/2 hour early and the line was around the corner...but we had a blast!

I forgot how bad the seating is here. In the past I seem to remember it not being quite as bad. When a show does not say “seated”, in front of the stage it’s standing room only. Everyone else is seated off to the side. For the most part all seated views are blocked. Some way more than others. Check out my picture to see how blocked our seats were. I won’t be coming back.

In its 50th Anniversary year, the Belly Up just keeps getting better. My first visits were more than 40 years ago. Even though in the early days they had a divided focus with pool tables, pinball machines and 3-Alarm Chili on the menu, they still managed to draw outsized musical talent. Legendary talent is still drawn to this intimate music venue. May it thrive for another 50 years…after that, anything goes!

Though Belly Up is a bit far from central San Diego, its totally worth the drive! Cozy yet accomodating, I LOVE the loft seating/VIP - they check people before allowing them in the area (which is up 1 flight of stairs and looks directly over the stage), some seats have a small round table top and those have a long bench seat with back support. The other seats up there are individual chairs with a small counter and you have a waitress to bring you food and drinks. Its what I want for every show now. Bonus points that you make eye contact with the performers, they feel that close! Most of the parking is pretty close too. Cant wait for the next show!

The venue itself is so much fun. The bands they get are so amazing. But the security it unnecessarily violent. I understand that they need to do their job, but it is not ok that they smack your shoulders and start screaming in your ears the first time you make a mistake standing somewhere you shouldn’t be. This behavior if anything is just provoking people to act violently because we are getting attacked right off the bat. Not sure if I will go back just because I do not feel like getting assaulted for absolutely no reason by some creepy security guy.

Oh my, we went to see Fabba, a “tribute” to ABBA. Advertising misleading. The show was mediocre to be kind. Costumes were just plain ugly, singers ok but went from ok to just awful with hideous costumes and dance routines. ABBA would be horrified. But, love the Belly Up, just not this band.

Nice venue with excellent acoustics. Not too big & not too small. Airflow & temperature was comfortable for standing room. I wish they added additional VIP/seating options. But keep in mind, standing ~2 hours gets you closer to the stage, because VIP & food seating is further away; so decide your priority before booking tickets. Ive seen many acts here; Iam Tongi, Mike Love, Katchafire, Common Kings, to name a few. Always the BEST acoustic.

Its a decent venue, but somehow every time I go I get the nonstop talkers around me. My personal opinion is the crowds at belly up shows arent my favorite. They are nice, but always seem to talk through most performers sets. That or I get the new couple that makes out next to me. I dont have this feelings about any other SD venue even the Sound thats in the same area. No idea if its my choice of spots in the venue or the venue itself. If you wanna chat hang at the bar.

This is a beautiful venue with great sound. This review is about the staff. Perhaps its the Belly-up business model to find that all of staff all of the time for 10 years is very indifferent. They never ever smile. They never say thank you. I have been in the food and beverage industry, mainly as a Las Vegas cocktail waitress, for 40 years, and I have never seen such sour puss employees in my life. Which leads me to ask the question, does working there really suck or are staff members required to act in a cold manner? I have always tipped and tipped well. Unless you tell me that you staff is required to behave in this manner, I will never tip your staff again and I will influences others to do the same.

The Belly Up Tavern is one of the premier clubs of Southern California. I remember growing up and hearing about this place and all the icon artists who have performed here throughout the years. I was here recently and had the best time. The food was unbelievably good. The staff was super nice and friendly. I could tell they all took good pride in working there, which was so nice to see. The music sounds awesome in that room with a top notch PA system. The place is surprisingly big and holds a lot of people. It was crowded for Missing Persons. The club is located walking distance from the beach. Solana Beach is paradise. Thank you for the best time ever and I look forward to returning again! From Las Vegas, Michael

Belly Up is an iconic venue and its very intimate, but many seats and places to stand have blocked or impared views. Arrive early to stake out the best seats and you wont be disappointed. Saw Gin Blossoms last Friday and they really surprised me with a very solid show. First time but it wont be my last.Happy to recommend Belly Up for a good time. I got the fealing that good times are what Belly Up does best and perhaps they had no idea what caliber of show they were hosting this night. (e.g. The opening act was a complete mismatch)I attended a great show by Dakah Brakah. My complaints are mainly tied to our premium balcony seating experience as an audience member.First, Belly Ups huge bright pink neon sign burned my corneas during dark poinient moments. I honored the no flash photography request but this meant my photos were blown out by this sign (ruined). Comedy clubs do this obnoxious branding but stages hosting performances of this caliber should not.Second, in spite of our premium seating, the row below us was directly in our line of site, blocking half of the stage. One person to our lefts view was obstructed by a support beam. We were also elbow to elbow until several people abandoned their seats (if you are going to be crowded this way, might as well be in the pit?). Once it thinned out, we were able to stand for a better view and even had enough room to dance and clap during the more jovial songs ~ something the people below us could not do ~ so the balcony did have its perks. I should mention that our table service was excellent.Security and wait staff were also excellent. This is definitely a good time venue. The crowd was friendly and the energy were great.I look forward to coming back for a good night of dancing under lighter themes the next time I am in town. I plan to dance on the floor but will likely retain a table to ensure a place to land is waiting for me.In sum, Belly Up could have done a better job as a stage when tasked with delivering what artists like DB have to offer. Premium seating requires careful consideration. I recommend that you visit the venue to make sure that you get the view you want if cost is a factor for you.

This cover band was amazing! The drinks were ok depending on what you get. The only criticism is a security guard getting a female off a stool she was sitting on. The security guard said that he needed the stool to sit the entire night. This is definitely not true because the stool was a regular customers stool right next to where other customers were sitting. Other security guards who were definitely in shape were walking and active the entire time. This particular security guard was not in shape at all and he just wanted to sit where the customers were. I think it was in very poor taste to get the lady off the stool not to mention customers are paying to sit and enjoy the concert. Arent customers a priority? I guess not at this place.

I have heard stories about the Belly Up. My wife grew up in So CA and she had been there going back to the 80s. When a friend said his tribute band, Prince Again, was playing there, we made the trek to Solana Beach to make a weekend out of it.From the description I heard of the Belly Up from my wife, I expected an old cramped venue that smelled of 50 years of beer, weed, and cigarettes. If it was that, someone went through the place with a construction crew and turned it into a concert hall that comfortably held a 500+ audience that were enthralled by “Prince”. I understand some big name acts appear there and well as up and coming acts.We only had drinks which were priced fairly. Not sure about the food situation except that next store they have a restaurant which was hopping. It was a fun evening and you can really enjoy the music from anywhere you sit or stand. The sound was fine though I thought it could have been better engineered. I’ve heard Prince again in several venues that sounded much better.

If you live in San Diego County, the Belly Up is a wonderful spot to see live music and have dinner. I had a salad with salmon on top and it was fabulous. I also saw Karl Densons band ( hes the guy Mick Jagger calls when the Stones tour ). My only issue is the mens room had no towels or dryer for your hands by 10:30pm. I told an employee about it and he nodded to me, like okay, but no one bothered🆗✍️ ... Also, I noticed that customers drinking at the bar cannot run a tab with their credit card. You have to pay for each drink or round after each transaction. Terrible idea, Mr. Bar Manager! People spend way less money because its an inconvenience. ( you are losing out on 30% more on sales and bartenders make less, too) also each transaction fee is more costly at batch-out.🆗✍️.. People running a tab will spend a lot of $$$$, you run into too many issues pulling out your card out 5x drinking at the bar especially when the bartender is a foot away. SMH

There are seats if you want them, or the main general standing area always has a sightline or two (if youre tall i suppose). Anyway, point is just go here and find out for yourself. This place is awesome.

Its a sad state of affairs at the Belly Up Tavern. After decades of good times and hundreds of shows at the Belly Up, I will no longer be purchasing tickets for any future shows. Having been pushed around by the security multiple times while standing in no ones way just trying to enjoy the show directly out from front stage left, (and to a lesser extent elsewhere in the venue) my night was ruined. This happened on 12/23/23 during the Los Lobos show. General security is WAY too aggressive! As I exited, many other patrons were mentioning similar experiences. I go to see my favorite bands and relax, not be harassed by the way over aggressive security.

You enter the concert venue through the backdoor of the Wild Note. Not a bad seat in the house. Good prices on bar and food service. Good attentive service at our table. Definitely a gem and icon in San Diego County.

Great little venue in Solana Beach. Its great to be able to actually see the band thats playing whether one is upfront or in the back since the stage is raised. Also, the sound is good and if you forget your ear plugs (protect your ears and listen to the musical sounds more clearly!), they sell some there.Near the entrance is a shop on the right hand side and on the left bands sell their merch. (was lucky to meet Kevin Haskins from Poptone and Bauhaus there when he kindly signed fans merch!)

Best live music venue in San Diego. I love the vibe, the selection of music, the Tavern next door…all of it. The only thing I would say is not to buy the seats across from the bar because there is a huge obstacle to one’s vision. It’s not worth the extra money. The seats near the stage are worth it though.

Ive been wanting to catch a show at the legendary Belly Up since moving to San Diego last January. I finally got the opportunity with the Marcus King Band from South Carolina Sept 4th. Completely blown away by the band and the club. Its kinda has this old dance barn atmosphere to it. Superior sound and decent bar offerings. Tons of local and national touring bands roll thru here, so should you. Highly recommended!

Such a cool place! Last night was my first time seeing a show in that venue (great show! The artist was The Breeders). And definitely not the last time Ill go there.Easy to get to, easy to park, perfect size (arena shows are not my cup of tea, but tiny venues are too small for big time artists). The belly up was sold out last night and it looked like 500-600 people), great atmosphere and beautiful beautiful sound. One wall was covered in photos and posters from notable past shows. You could see that the place has a rich musical history. That wall reminded me a bit of the Fillmore in San Francisco with its row of posters for shows with Jimi Hendrix, Bob Dylan etc.

Another small venue live music gem in the San Diego arsenal. While this place is not located in San Diego proper, per se, it is technically in San Diego County. In other words, it is a roughly 45-60 minute drive up the coast. The venue is small but larger than Brick by Brick, Soda Bar, and the Casbah. The bar is located near the entrance and a bit away from the music area. There are benches in the corner (back) of the music area in case you are tired. The acoustics are great and there is not a bad seat in the house. Belly up attracts larger acts, like Cage the Elephant -- who I saw here several times -- and smaller acts like Juliette Lewis and her band.

Its always a fun time to be had. Lots of great bands come through this venue. The bar tenders, hosts, and door crew are always friendly. They have a coat check, too! Be sure to tip them; they are all well worth it. Security takes care of issues right away, as well, and the fella last night even directed us to better seats that opened up. I would recommend . . . Ladies, leave your purse at home. Either use your pockets or a small pouch that you can attach to your belt or around your neck. Trust me, youll want your hands free to dance, and maybe hold a beverage. However, if it is your special time of the month, bring some necessities. They dont always have them available unless theres a tipped bathroom attendant. Have fun if you go! I ALWAYS do!

We went for a date night mid-week and saw Hermanos Gutierrez, a guitar duo. Its been a while since weve last been here and I have to say it is still one of the best spots in coastal North County for a local concert. Parking is fairly easy to find or there is the option of taking the train as the station is not too far away. We went midweek So maybe this is why street parking was easy and free a couple blocks away . No matter where youre at in the venue, mostly standing room and some tables on the sides, you get great visibility and sound. I loved that they had an inexpensive coat check too!

If you don’t purchase guaranteed seating, get there early to secure a seat/table; otherwise it’s SRO which is good for dancing. We usually call & purchase loft seats. Visuals from the loft are good. The Belly Up Tavern is a wonderful intimate venue. I have seen Sergio Mendez and recently saw Bebel Gilberto in concert at this venue. Every time I have been to the Belly Up Tavern, I purchased a ticket for the loft section. Unfortunately, my recent visit was marred by no-service by the server assigned to the loft seating area (with assigned seats). Upon my arrival I was greeted by Charles, taken to my seat and told that the server would be right over. Unfortunately, Kim or Kimber, as I learned that is her name, made it her job to ignore me all evening, even though I was approximately the 4th person to be seated in that section and she had to walk by me to get to other concert-goers seated after I arrived. I finally got up and went downstairs to the main bar to order my champagne split and returned to my seat. At no point did Kim or Kimber acknowledge or address me, but she did serve the individuals to the left and the right of me. The actions or non-actions of your employee did mar what was to be a relaxing and enjoyable evening seeing Bebel (again) in concert. While I do enjoy going to this venue for shows, I will definitely think twice about returning or recommending the venue to my clients and friends.

Their neon sign changed after years.Went to a concert last night. The sound guy ruined the great music. So much bass, (I normally love lots of bass), but so much it felt like I was in an old truck in the 70s with blown speakers. Sat in the north west corner area and they must have done construction and not waited long enough to let people not smell it. A noxious PVC pipe glue smell. Different bartenders than normal, a cluster outside with lame security guys for the VIP line and then after the concert were actually making fun of some concert attendees on our way out. Not me, but some excited concert goers. So unprofessional. What happened! So sad.
